Kids Experiments - Air takes up space

Kids Experiments - Air takes up space

Step : 1 Fill a bucket with water. Take a paper towel & place it in the bottom of a glass. Turn the glass upside down & push it straight down into the bucket of water.

Step : 2 Take the glass straight out of the bucket without tilting it. The paper towel stays dry.

Why did this happen?
Water cannot enter the glass because it is already filled with air. Even when the glass was inside water, the paper was already surrounded by air. That is why it remained dry. What will happen if you tilt the glass? By tilting the glass, some of the air will escape as bubbles and water will enter in the glass. This shows that air occupies space.
